Superman Teaser Trailer - Not more DECONSTRUCTION!?

My musings The Teaser Trailer for James Gunn's relaunched Superman, will it save the DCU?

Greetings everyone,

When it was first announced that James Gunn would be tasked with revamping the DC Universe, I must confess, I was hesitant.

Sure, I adored his work on Guardians of the Galaxy, but his track record is inconsistent, and he seems to have a penchant for the unconventional. This was evident in The Suicide Squad, a film that seemed to have the budget of a blockbuster, felt more like The A-Team.

As more details about Gunn's vision for the DC Universe were

revealed, my apprehension only grew, particularly when I learned that he would be writing and directing Superman. I found myself fearing that his penchant for casting idiosyncratic heroes might not be the right fit for the Man of Steel.

Now that the first teaser has been released, my feelings remain mixed.

On one hand, there were elements I liked, yet other aspects left me unimpressed. For instance, it appears we are once again stepping into the realm of deconstruction - a trend that I, and I suspect many others, find increasingly tiresome. Furthermore, the costume design for Superman was rather disappointing, resembling a subpar joke shop purchase rather than the iconic suit we all know and love.

Additionally, the casting choices have been a cause for concern. Nathan Fillion, much as I admire him, doesn't seem like the right choice for Guy Gardner. And while many fans are excited about Krypto, the inclusion of the superdog only furthers my worry about the tone veering towards the goofy side.

There have, however, been a few pleasant surprises. Nicholas Holt seems promising as Lex Luther, and I'm open to being won over by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Visually, the teaser is a feast for the eyes, with a nostalgic, classic superhero feel. It also hints at an exploration of the relationship between Clark and Lois, a crucial aspect of the Superman story, as important as the pows and zaps.

Despite my criticisms, I'm still hopeful that James Gunn can deliver a Superman film that strikes the right balance between emotional depth and humour. However, he does have a tendency to derail serious moments with ill-timed jokes, a habit I hope he curbs in this project.

Superman, a hero
Superman should symbolize hope, inspiring other heroes through his deeds and unwavering morality. This was wonderfully portrayed in the 1978 version of Superman and I hope Gunn draws inspiration from that.

At this juncture, I remain unconvinced and my initial concerns persist. But what are your thoughts? Did the teaser meet your expectations or are you, like me, still uncertain?

I'm giving this a score of 6
