MCU Disney Plus reel - BAIT and SWITCH
Published: 31st October 2024, by Andrew Radbourne.
My musings on the recent MCU reel, showing what's coming to Disney Plus, overshadowing the cr*p with stuff people might want ...
Greetings everyone,
Today, I want to chat about the recent teaser trailers. It seemed to me that they were heavily centred around Daredevil, with the other characters appearing as mere afterthoughts. I must forewarn you, a part of this article may come across as a rant, but I will save that for the end.
The Daredevil snippet looked intriguing, offering a glimpse of a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) toned version of the Netflix shows. It seemed a bit more lighthearted than the grim and grounded Netflix series, which is a refreshing change. Given the extensive re-shoots, there is hope that this character will finally be done justice.
However, I was not quite taken with the "friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man" art style. The clip we saw featured Spider-Man striking a child in the head with a brick, which didn't sit well with my expectations for the character.
Moving on, the Iron Heart trailer was visually appealing, offering a classic trailer experience. However, it seems like they might be repeating the same mistakes they made in the comics, portraying her more as a villain than a hero. Considering the character's lacklustre performance in the comics, this approach seems misguided.
We also got brief glimpses of "What If Marvel Zombies" and "Eyes of Wakanda", but there wasn't much to go on, leaving little to be excited about. Hopefully, the third season of "What If" will surpass its predecessor. Given that "Marvel Zombies" was a standout episode from the first season, there is some optimism for its future. As for "Eyes of Wakanda", the absence of Black Panther leaves it feeling incomplete.
The teasers also included Deadpool and Wolverine, which seemed like a desperate attempt to sweeten the deal for potential Disney+ subscribers. However, I have some reservations about the upcoming Wonderman series.
Wonderman, or Simon Williams, first appeared in Avengers #9 way back in 1964. I became a fan of this character during the 70s. His rich backstory made him feel like a real hero. However, the trailer for the series felt disjointed, and the character seems far removed from his comic book origins.
What's more disconcerting is that they've race-swapped him and abandoned his original backstory. By transforming him into a comedic character, they've veered off course from the essence of the character.
It's disappointing to see Marvel resort to such tactics instead of exploring the rich tapestry of black characters in their roster. Criticizing this move does not make one an istaphobe. It's simply a desire to see characters remain true to their original depiction.
Despite my reservations, I will be watching the series, if only to review it. However, it will be the only show I've ever begun with a sense of resentment.
So, did any of these teasers catch your eye? Or did it also feel like they were primarily showcasing Daredevil and Deadpool, with the other characters merely serving as filler?
Thank you for reading, and if you enjoyed this article, please like and subscribe. Until the next one, which will be about the eighth episode of "Agatha All Along". Here's hoping for a good watch. Peace out.
